Difficult Proboscis Monkeys

The quality of images that we find for different animals varies quite a lot: proboscis monkeys seem to be unusual in zoos and difficult to photograph in the wild.

Magnificient Marmosets

Marmosets are highly active, living in the upper canopy of forest trees, and feeding on insects, fruit and leaves. They have long lower incisors, which allow them to chew holes in tree trunks and branches to harvest the gum inside; some species are specialised feeders on gum.

Endangered Guenons

All Guenons are endemic to Africa, and most are forest monkeys. Many of the species are quite local in their ranges, and some have even more local subspecies. All or nearly all are threatened or endangered because of habitat loss.

Hanuman Langurs

One thing you notice about monkeys is an incredible amount of biodiversity: even inside a genus you’ll find species that look really different. The Hanuman Langur is famous for hanging around historical and spiritual sites in India:

Amazing Langurs

Monkey Business

Updates on this site haven’t followed the loading of animals because, frankly, I’m overwhelmed by the primates.  I’m looking at wikipedia and other sources and building an ontology that respects biology (which taxonomists don’t entirely agree about,)  popular understanding (so that non-specialists can use the site) and the availability of images.  I’ve been disappointed with the quality of images for some kinds of monkeys (I guess monkey houses are poorly lit,  and so is the rainforest floor) but Macaques have turned out quite well.
